National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month
    Contact: Steve Kragenbrink   805.543.9316 x19   skragenbrink@woodshumane.org
Woods Humane Society encourages you to “Adopt and make it for Life”! June is National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month and Woods Humane Society is celebrating this annual event by reducing the adoption fee for all adult felines (4months and older) to $50 for the entire month! Woods Humane Society has seen a marked increase in the number of animals brought in for economic reasons. Through increased adoptions and community awareness, Woods has been able to keep pace with the growth of its feline population, but shelter staff worry that the number of animals surrendered will continue to grow throughout the summer—peak time for litters of kittens to arrive at the shelter. Woods Humane Society prides itself on being a premier animal care facility and every adoptable feline is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped prior to going home. If you are looking to bring a loving new companion feline into your life, please consider stopping by Woods Humane Society and spend some time getting to know all of the truly wonderful adult cats who are desperately seeking a home to call their own! Founded in 1955, Woods Humane Society has proudly served the homeless animals of San Luis Obispo County for 54 years. Woods Humane Society is an animal sheltering and welfare organization based in San Luis Obispo that annually places over 1,200 dogs and cats into loving homes.

     Hunger Awareness Day
    Contact: Carl Hansen   238-4664   chansen@slofoodbank.org
The idea is simple: if everyone in SLO County contributed one dollar on one day to the Food Bank Coalition, we would realize over $250,000 in revenue—a very large portion of the funding we need to pursue our mission to feed the hungry for an entire year.

In 2008, we added just over $125,000 to our food budget. Each year brings us a little bit closer to our ultimate goal of “One Day, One Dollar!”

This year, Hunger Awareness Day is Saturday, June 2nd. Volunteers will be at collection sites throughout the county to receive donations. Look for the banner and donate one dollar to help wipe out local hunger. Contributions are also welcome by phone at 238-4664 or online at slofoodbank.org.

8:00 PM RSVP XIV: Emergent Forms Transmedia Theatrical Concert
    Contact: Michele Abba   805-756-2406   music@calpoly.edu
The Cal Poly Music Department student production ensemble RSVP will stage productions of “Emergent Forms” at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, June 2 and 4, in the Pavilion in the Performing Arts Center.

Set in Lucca, Italy, sometime in the near future, the production follows the Puccinisti—a ragtag resistance movement that has taken the great Italian opera composer, Giacomo Puccini as the icon of their movement—in their opposition of the artless, merciless technological regime Uno Stato.

“This year’s production cleverly weaves not only the music of Puccini with new operatic arias and music of other styles, but even integrates seminal moments from the maestro’s famous operas into the plot,” said Music Professor Antonio G. Barata, artistic director and series producer.

The music, lyrics, stage design, acting and singing combine the creative talent of music majors and technical talent of students from Barata’s sound design courses.

Tickets are $11 and are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787).

The shows are sponsored by the Cal Poly Music Department, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406.

Exhibition: FAST FORWARD 2009: Selections from The Berkus Family Collection

Location: Channing Peake Gallery, 1st floor County Administration Building, 105 E. Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara, CA

The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission presents FAST FORWARD 2009: Selections from The Berkus Family Collection, curated by Heather Jeno Silva, which revisits a selection of contemporary artists in the County’s Barry Berkus and Family Collection, in honor of Gail Berkus.

The exhibition features current works juxtaposed with earlier works from the collection to reveal surprising insights about the process of artistic evolution. Silva, whose professional experience includes arts writer, arts columnist, and Public Programs Curator for the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, said, “The Berkus Collection is an extraordinary representation of Santa Barbara's rich visual arts legacy. Since many of the artists featured have not shown locally in recent history, it was my intent to evoke a sense of rediscovery and renewed enthusiasm about Santa Barbara's local arts treasures."

Among artists highlighted in this exhibition Lawrence Argent, Sky Bergman, Ginny Brush, Jeff Brouws, Dan Connally, Sam Erenberg, Rollin Fortier, Timothy Hearsum, Ken Hendrickson, Dimitri Kozyrev, and Harry Reese. Media includes sculpture, painting, drawing, mixed media printmaking, collage, photography, ceramics, and digital media.

Barry Berkus, noted Santa Barbara architect, art collector, and philanthropist, donated a large number of artworks from his collection to the County of Santa Barbara, through the County Arts Commission. All of the works given are by artists who live, or lived for an extended period, in the Santa Barbara area. This gift represents over 70 art works and span 25 years of collecting work by area artists.

Couples will learn how to significantly improve credit scores, take advantage of tax benefits, pay down debt, make money grow, and more. “A romantic relationship is a partnership,” says Carter, explaining that it makes cents to openly discuss financial goals and hardships with your life partner. Moreover, “Learning to manage money and prepare for the future together is a great opportunity for growth and for building trust. And with your partner by your side, you can even have fun with finances!” That is precisely the goal of the Ultimate Couples’ 101 Class which Carter orchestrated—to learn about financial strategies in a fun, warm, and stress-free environment. She says that both long-term and new couples can afford to talk about money together. “Financial stability plays a huge role in achieving relationship stability.     WINNER OF THE OPRAH "O" MAGAZINE DREAM BIG CONTEST

Ella Porter was a school teacher for over twenty years. While working for the San Luis Obispo County Schools, she saw the need for a facility that could take care of the youngest members of our community. The dream became a reality when STARS Infant/Preschool Center opened their doors in February 2005 as a 5,600 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility designed exclusively for children from 6 weeks to five years old. STARS is unique in that it is the first, and to date, the only center of its kind in the North County. Ella entered a "Dream Big" contest in the Oprah "O" Magazine and was chosen a winner out of 12,000 entries. As a winner, STARS was awarded a playground design by Boundless Playground. The playground equipment was not included. When you talk with Ella you can hear the excitement and commitment in her voice when she talks about children. When you visit stars, you can feel the family atmosphere where parents and teachers communicate and children are truly loved. "It's hard to be a working parent but I know when I drop my daughter off at preschool, she is happy, learning and well taken care of. She is talking more, learning lots and loves interacting with the other children," says Erica McNeal, a parent at STARS. For the last few years, dedicated parents at STARS Preschool hold an annual fundraiser to help raise money for playground equipment and to continue to improve this unique facility. This year's event includes a wine and cheese reception featuring pours from local wineries, dinner, live music, a Silent and Live Auction. STARS needs a helping hand from family, friends and the community to make donations and attend our event. Wine, dine and dance the night away with STARS. "A Night Under the STARS" will be held on June 6, 2009 at 6:00 pm at Mondo Cellars Winery located at 3260 Nacimiento Lake Drive, Paso Robles, CA 93446. Tickets are $60.00 per person or $400.00 for a table of 8.

The annual Spring Band Concert will feature trombonist Alex Iles in Eric Ewazen's "Visions of Light," a trombone concerto inspired by three photographs taken by Ansel Adams.

The June 6 concert date is the 65th anniversary of D-Day. The Wind Ensemble will perform "Lonely Beach, Normandy 1944," a musical reenactment of the Normandy invasion. The striking performance features trumpets and drums surrounding the audience and WWII newsreel footage as a backdrop. San Luis Obispo resident and combat veteran Leo Domouchelle will be a special guest for the performance. Domouchelle was dropped behind the German line of defense two hours before the Normandy Landing and earned two Purple Hearts in one day.

Santa Barbara Permaculture Network continues to learn about the world and it's people with its special series “Permaculture Around the World”, this time focusing on Central America with a talk by Juan Rojas of the Institute of Mesoamerican Permaculture (IMAP). Mesoamerica is a term that recognizes the cultural, ecological, traditional, and sociological similarities, rather than political boundaries of what currently makes up the countries of Central America. Juan Rojas is a certified permaculture instructor and one of the founders of both the Institute of Mesoamerican Permaculture and the Permaculture Institute of El Salvador who has worked with others to acknowledge these similarities along with the comparable dilemmas and obstacles that countries in the regions share. Juan Rojas was born in El Salvador, who after qualifying as an industrial electrician became involved in the trade union struggles of the 1980's. Forced into exile by a brutal military regime, he spent four years in Mexico, and later eight years in Australia where he studied Permaculture as a useful tool for rebuilding his home country following the peace accords of 1992. Rojas has been instrumental in establishing grassroots organizations aimed at appropriate methods of farming and land restoration, always seeking the skills and expertise of local farmers. Since 1994 Rojas has been a part of the thirty year old Campesino a Campesino (Farmer to Farmer) movement that has helped farming families in the rural villages of Latin America improve their livelihoods and conserve their natural resources by individual farmers sharing their wealth of wisdom directly with each other. The event takes place at the Santa Barbara Public Library, Faulkner Gallery, 40 East Anapamu St, in downtown Santa Barbara, on Thursday, June 11, 7pm, 2009. No reservations are required, donation $5.

Singer-songwriters Greg Beattie and Victoria Blythe, along with instrumentalist Dave Decker, combine voices and a half dozen acoustic instruments into original songs that are both fresh and timeless--from the roots of American traditional song forms to explorations of contemporary sounds. Their songs have captured the prestigious Kerrville New Folk prize, grand prize in the West Coast Songwriters International song contest as well as first place in two additional categories, the Napa Valley Emerging Songwriter award, West Coast Songwriter’s Association Song of the Year honors, and have appeared in TV shows and movies, including Angel, Anywhere But Here and Fame-L.A. Their songs have been recorded by other artists and on numerous compilations with such well known artists as Joan Baez and Cheryl Wheeler. Their live show is a mix of Victoria’s soaring, ethereal vocals and hauntingly beautiful fiddle on pure folk ballads and sultry jazz-fusion torch songs, Greg’s energetic and insightful musical treatment of birth, death and everything in between, and Dave’s constantly creative lead-guitar commentary. Their new album, Green Girl, is the culmination of nearly 10 years of writing, performing and dreaming since their prior release--songs that are varied but genuine representations of the many roads they've traveled.

Morro Coast Audubon will be hosting its final TogetherGreen Volunteer Days at the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve on Saturday, June 13th from 9am to 12pm. This is the last in a series of six events that were made possible through a generous grant from National Audubon and Toyota. Since last September - when we kicked off TogetherGreen Volunteer Days –more than 175 volunteers have contributed in excess of 525 hours of their time making Sweet Springs a better place. So much has been accomplished, including planting over 300 native plants, seeding native wildflowers, removing invasive weeds and sprucing up benches and signs. There’s still time to make your mark! Although some people have volunteered over and over again, we have new faces every time we meet. So give it a try and you’ll be glad you did! We provide the munchies, tools and tips on what needs to be done. You’ll learn about both native and non-native plants that are common to our area, and why restoring natives is so important. You’ll even have a chance to win a free Together Green t-shirt, cap, or shopping bag and tour the new addition to the preserve.

"Step into Your Divinity, Live an Empowered Life" Get on board if you're not already!, This Playshop will put you on the fast track to enlightenment. Krishna White is the facilitator for this two hour Playshop. In this journey, we begin by assisting you to align your physical, emotional and energetic bodies. Next you will step into your divinity core, the Shakti or spiritual energy, which connects you to Heaven and Earth. It is in this state you will learn to ground yourself in the flow of the Source. Here, in the divine core, lies the place of empowerment. Through this adventure you are rooted in the exalted fountain of the Kundalini Shakti rushing through your Being. You are encouraged to play within the expanding pillar of golden white light that is coursing through your Being. When your core starts to expand, your body may feel like an old rubber jump suit that is a ½ size too small ... feeling slightly restricted in close proximity with dense energy. Using the Kundalini Shakti to stretch and cultivate the energy, increases the space within your divinity core, which releases the tension in the body. In this space, your connection to God is your place of sanctuary where you may dance through life in ease and grace with joyous strides.

Antimatter bombs? Black holes that could destroy the earth? Learn what is fact and what is fiction regarding the Sony Pictures film, Angels and Demons. The Matter with Antimatter & Other Mysteries of the Universe, a lecture at the San Luis Obispo Library, will offer a rare glimpse into the science behind the film. Presenting the program will be Jennifer Klay, who is an assistant professor of physics at Cal Poly and has worked at the research lab depicted in Angels and Demons. The lecture takes place in the San Luis Obispo Library Community Room, Saturday June 13 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The event is free and no registration is required. Refreshments will be provided, courtesy of San Luis Obispo Friends of the Library. Angels and Demons is adapted from the bestselling novel by Dan Brown and is a sequel to The DaVinci Code. The film, which recently opened in theaters, was directed by Ron Howard and stars Tom Hanks. Angels and Demons centers on a plot to blow up the Vatican using a canister of anti-matter stolen from CERN Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator at a multi-national research lab in Swizerland. Lecture presenter Klay is currently working on experiments at CERN. “There are many stories about the CERN particle collider out there that make it sound pretty dangerous,” said Klay. “Angels and Demons takes a kernel of truth and weaves it into a riveting story. My talk will identify the facts and fiction about antimatter and explain how particle physics can help us answer some of the most significant questions about how we came to be.” The event is a part of a series of lectures nationwide organized by the US Large Hadron Collider Users Organization (USLUO), and is supported by Sony Pictures and the San Luis Obispo Library.

“Day-To-Day Buddhism” With Dharma Teacher Khedrup Zangmo.

This meditation practice and teaching will focus on bringing our practice into our lives and world. Buddhism offers many methods to relieve suffering in our own lives and in the lives of others. Nobody wants to suffer and everyone wants to be happy. Learning to meditate with trained guidance can ease our suffering and truly transform our lives. Learning to take these experiences out in the world truly transforms us and the world we live in. We will discuss taking our sitting and other practices into our daily lives and finding the space in our busy lives for practice. Khedrub Zangmo has been studying and practicing Buddhism for over 25 years. Under the guidance of the highly respected meditation master Lama Gendun Rinpoche, she took monastic vows and completed two consecutive three-year retreats at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling in central France. After completing her second retreat in 1997, Khedrub lived in the women's monastery established by Gendun Rinpoche and began teaching Buddhism in centers, schools and organizations in Europe and in the USA. At the request of Shamar Rinpoche, Khedrub moved back to the US in 2000. Khedrub is currently a resident teacher of the Pasadena Bodhi Path Center.

3 Leg Torso http://www.3legtorso.com Red Skunk Jipzee Swing Band to open

3 Leg Torso formed in 1996 as violin, cello and accordion trio with the mission of creating original modern chamber music for their unique instrumentation. Over the following years the band has expanded both its musical mission and its size to become a quintet that now performs its eclectic synthesis of chamber music, tango, klezmer, latin and world music.. The bands history began with street performances, which they titled "Meestering", and has led to their releasing two CDs (3 Leg Torso and Astor in Paris), East Coast and West Coast tours, performances with symphony orchestras and a profile on National Public Radio’s "All Things Considered" . The cinematic nature of their music has made it a natural for them to work with many independent film makers. These collaborations have included scoring The Dowager's Feast and The Dowager's Idyll, two films by Academy Award winning animator Joan Gratz; scoring With Hope and Help, a United Nations funded documentary on AIDS in Thailand; the piece Divertissments for Performing Bears being used as theme music for a Bosnian television series. In 2003, Von Drehle was awarded a Fellowship at the Sundance Film Composers Lab. Twice the band has been commissioned by the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art to create new evening length works, most recently involving a collaboration with David Greenberger, the originator of The Duplex Planet. Sunday, June 14th at 3:00pm outdoors at Stacked Stone Cellars in west Paso Robles. Tickets $15 and on sale at the winery. 1523 Peachy Canyon Road. Bring low-back chairs.     Artists Unite to Fight Effects of the Economic Downturn

Collaboration Meeting Called For Monday, June 15th at Contemporary Arts Forum in Paseo Nuevo Mall

The economy got you down? What do artistic types do about it? America’s nonprofit arts have been hit as hard, if not harder, than other areas of the community by the economic downturn. With ticket sales falling and contributions through foundations and grant support dwindling, how can the arts be sustained in Santa Barbara? That was the challenge put before an ad hoc volunteer committee assembled under the guidance of Ginny Brush, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission. Meeting every other week for two years, this group of artists, arts administrators, local business people and community leaders looked at a variety of plans and potential solutions that might keep the arts alive. The conclusions reached by the committee and the formation of the new Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative (SBAC) were announced at the Santa Barbara County Arts Symposium in April in the form of a Strategic Plan. It is a plan that borrows from several different historic models. “Basically, we are saying it is time for all artists and arts lovers to join together as collaborators, and begin supporting each other” said Roderick Hare, chairman of the SBAC advisory board. “Working together, the arts in Santa Barbara will be stronger than any one artist working alone.” “As the regional arts agency, the County Arts Commission is dedicated to promoting and preserving Santa Barbara’s vibrant art and culture and especially providing support for those area artists that live, create and perform here”, states Commission Executive Director Ginny Brush. “One of the goals of this year’s Arts Symposium was to provide information and working sessions for individuals and organizations to brainstorm, share ideas on new ways to collaborate to sustain the arts community while adjusting to dramatic shifts in demographics, technology and the economy.” All involved in the formation of the SBAC agreed that the problems all artists are facing in this environment can be a strong catalyst for change. “There are resources we should be sharing. There is cooperative marketing that would help all of us save money” said Albert Ihde, Producing Director of SBT: The Santa Barbara Theatre “Will the current economic crisis turn the tide and bring us all together?” The SBAC is a new, nonprofit association of artists, arts workers, and arts lovers from all disciplines (performing arts, visual arts, literary arts, etc) united to sustain the arts in Santa Barbara County. Working in collaboration, this dedicated group plans to provide: • Develop a grants program to benefit individual artists and arts workers. • Web-based forum to facilitate collaboration, centralized event schedule, etc. • Promoting the arts/monthly Arts Guide to donors and sponsors. • Cooperative marketing and Resource Sharing. • Mentoring. The SBAC will hold its first working session on Monday, June 15, from 5 to 7 pm, at the Contemporary Arts Forum (CAF) in the Paseo Nuevo Mall. Ian Smith, President of the CAF Board of Directors and another member of the SBAC Advisory Board says “We’re inviting everyone who cares about the arts in Santa Barbara to come and learn more about this important effort.” The SBAC believes that our community needs to find new ways to fully sustain the arts in any economic environment. Financial support is critical but it needs to be raised from new and innovative sources. We cannot continue to go to the same well. We need to develop and grow new audiences for all forms of art. And we need to find ways to share valuable resources. While there are currently no plans to charge dues for membership by artists and arts workers, the SBAC supports the “give what you can, do what you can” approach to generating support for the Collaborative. The organizational structure of the SBAC will be collaborative as well. Active members will vote for representatives to serve on a Members Council. This council will oversee other committees that will plan and execute the work of the Collaborative. “We encourage everyone interested in following up on the conversation started at the Arts Symposium to come to this meeting and get engaged in this grassroots effort, invites Ginny Brush and members of the Arts Collaborative Advisory Committee. For additional information, please go to Facebook and check out the Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative fan page or call Ginny Brush, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission at (805) 568-3992.

"LOVE TOWN": AN ENCHANTING NEW COMEDY ABOUT A LITTLE SEASIDE TOWN AND WINNER OF PPP'S FIRST PLAYWRITING CONTEST

The Pewter Plough is presenting “LOVE TOWN” by Michael Kaplan, an imaginative and very funny new play set in an idyllic and picturesque little "romantic getaway" much like Cambria, where a newly opened gift shop becomes a haven for the impassioned and eccentric denizens of the village. When the owner of the Cozy Corner shop runs off with the Aromatherapy gal across the street, her husband is left to deal with all manner of hilarious and outlandish escapades. One can easily imagine these offbeat characters and predicaments showing up right here on Main Street in Cambria!

The play won our first Pewter Plough Playwriting Contest, being voted the best original script from the submissions we received from throughout San Luis Obispo county. The winner was awarded a $1,000 cash prize, given by the Playhouse through a grant from Robert Lane of Morro Bay, the originator of the PPP contest, with the goal to cultivate original plays by local talent. Our judges praised Love Town for its imaginative story line and well-developed characters.

Our cast includes Gregg Wolff, Karen Moncharsh, Craig Brooke, Sharyn Young, Donn Clarius, Daniel Harris, Blake Spiller, Mackenzie Allen and Anne Zinke. The Director is Karen Moncharsh. The Production Manager is Kathryn Kenny. The play contains mature themes.

Preview night is Friday, May 1, at 7:30 pm, tickets are $12.
Gala Champagne Opening is Saturday, May 2, at 7:30 pm, including a Champagne and Dessert Reception after the show, all tickets $25.

Book Signing, Reading and Presentation. New Book: “It’s The Stories You Tell That Color Your Life” by local authors Alan & Marylou Falstreau. Saturday June 20, 2009 4 pm – 6 pm Book Reading & Presentation 5 pm Steynberg Gallery 1531 Monterey Street San Luis Obispo, Ca. 93401 Is There An Antidote To Today’s Fear & Worry? Yes . . . change the stories you tell! Alan Falstreau and artist, Marylou Falstreau have combined their talents and created “It’s The Stories You Tell That Color Your Life”. In a time when newscasters, friends and family tell stories that scare you, this book tells stories of understanding, healing and joy. What readers have said: • I read your book and was charmed by it! • I received a copy of your wonderful little book yesterday and it is already lifting my spirits! • I was touched by the story of its evolution that you included on the back cover. • The structure of the book is simple yet the messages are profound and inspirational. • Thank you for the wonderful, powerful little gift you have created and for sharing it with others! • I'm getting that book!!! Thank you for sharing a gift. How the book came about: It began in May of 2008. The “Crazy Ole Man” (Alan) left home between 5:30 and 6:00 every morning with his notebook in hand and his heart wide open. He recently had made the decision to leave his job and start a business of his own . . . a business more in alignment with his nature . . . a business that would use his many talents. The notebook was for recording ideas. Aimlessly wandering, he eventually made his way down to the harbor of the Central Coast town where he lives. Observing the nature of pelicans, sea lions, and other early bird coffee seeking locals, he began to write. The words came quickly and effortlessly. “Where is this coming from?,” he wondered. Returning home, amazed, he shared his daily message with his wife Marylou. She was equally amazed. They were beginning to believe anything was possible.

Could Dad use a few laughs? Treat him to an evening with the hilarious Kacey Jones, writer of "Every Man I've Ever Loved is Married, Gay or Dead", "I Could Get Over Him (If I Could Get Under You)" and her latest, "Donald Trump's Hair". This special Father's Day concert will be held at The Clubhouse at This Old House, 740 W. Foothill, SLO. Tickets are $10, available at the door. 805-548-8500, www.clubhousereport.com. Kacey will be accompanied at the Clubhouse by guitarist Dorian Michael. The Clubhouse is open to all ages, serving a full dinner menu of steaks, seafood, salads, desserts and more. Audiences have been laughing with Kacey Jones for decades. She's been laughed at by the likes of People Magazine, USA Today, CMT and GAC television, Entertainment Tonight, the "Bob and Tom" radio show, and on NPR as Garrison Keillor's guest on "A Prairie Home Companion". With Kacey Jones there's a lot to laugh about. Hers was, after all, the brilliant mind that conceived one of Nashville's most unique and revered all-girl cult groups, "Ethel and The Shameless Hussies," who broke above the waves in the late 80's on MCA Records. In 1998 Kacey recorded and produced, "Men Are Some of My Favorite People" for Curb Records, considered a classic among collectors of intelligent humor mixed with great music. During this time she also produced Kinky Friedman's critically acclaimed album, "Pearls in the Snow," featuring Tom Waits, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Delbert McClinton, Dwight Yoakam, and other legends. The CD hit #1 on the Americana radio chart in 1999. A year later, Kacey recorded a duet with Delbert McClinton, "You're the Reason Our Kids are Ugly" that remained at #1 on the European Country Chart for nine weeks straight. In 2000 Kacey hooked up with The Sweet Potato Queens and was named their "Official Songstress" by Boss Queen and best-selling author, Jill Conner Browne. Kacey wrote their theme song, "Be Particular."

City Nights Jazz presents Los Angeles vocalist Yevette Stewart at the Inn at Morro Bay, Friday, June 26th from 7-10pm, with the Mike Raynor Group. Yevette Stewart's father was a bassist and her mother a dancer. She grew up in San Francisco around musicians, dancers, singers and other performers. She was precociously emulating singer Ella Fitzgerald at the age of five; Sang in jazz groups as early a 13, and later pursued vocal and instrumental studies. She began working with prestigious musicians at the Denver Playboy club, Rainbow Music Hall, and other well known Denver venues. She has also appeared at Jazz festivals in Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge, and Ottercrest Oregon. Internationally known jazz critic, the late Leonard Feather said: "Yevette Stewart, (saxophonist's Pete Christlieb's discovery,) is that rarity, a young singer who has jazz roots (a touch of Dinah Washington?), Good taste in tunes (Blossom Dearie's "Hey John") and plenty, plenty of soul. "Feather heard Stewart when she first came to Los Angeles as part of the Pete Christlieb's quartet. And he said in his review: "...Whoever said there were no real jazz singers coming up evidently has not heard Stewart."

The Snowy Plover Docent Program relies of volunteer docents to act as ambassadors of the beach. The Western Snowy Plover is a threatened species of shorebird that nests in the sandy dunes at Coil Oil Point Reserve. The bids, although quite small, are extremely important to the complex beach ecosystem. For over 50 years the plovers abandoned our beach because of human disturbance, but now, a decade after the initiation of the reserve, the plover have returned and their population has flourished under our watchful eye. As docents you would commit to a two hour beach shift each week where you would monitor and educate beach users. Its a great opportunity to get involved with local conservation while also immersing yourself is the natural beauty of Santa Barbara county. Our next training will take place June 27th, 2009 at the Cliff House at Coal Oil Point Reserve at 9am to 12pm.     "Mother's Boys" - Peter Feldmann, David Jackson, & Rick Cunha with a program of Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers and similar songs and tunes with guitars, mandolin, and string bass. Grange Hall, 2374 Alamo Pintado Avenue, Los Olivos CA. Tickets $12, available online at www.BlueGrassWest.com and at the Book Loft, Solvang, CA. Exploring the roots of American Music, Mother's Boys dynamically recreate the music of the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, and other country music greats with wonderful harmonies, hot pickin' and yodeling madness, with guitars, mandolin, banjo, slide guitar and uke. "Country music . . . with the hairy side out!" Peter Feldmann, A singer and multi- instrumentalist with many years' performing experience throughout California and the West, Peter Feldmann has been presenting bluegrass, folk, string band, and related musics since the early 1960's, and is known as the founder of the Santa Barbara Old Time Fiddler's Convention, and the original Bluebird Café in Santa Barbara, a music club highly influential on the Southern California Music scene. Peter's tribute CD to Uncle Dave Macon, "Grey Cat On The Tennessee Farm", was named to the nation's Top Ten Bluegrass albums of 2005 by the Chicago Tribune. David Jackson. Being in the right place at the right time /and /lucky, David Jackson's career began with 3 years on The Andy Williams show as a comedian and bassist and little has changed in the intervening years, if hair loss doesn't count. Writing "Joy To The World" (with Hoyt Axton for 3 Dog Night) and "The No,No Song" (Again, with Hoyt, for Ringo Starr) and playing with Jackson Brown, Glenn Campbell, Roger Miller and John Denver still left time to sandwich in a wide variety of musics over the years. Still, there is so much more playing to do. Rick Cunha may truly be described as a guitar players' guitar player. He is also one of America's finest songwriters.

Actor/activist/author Mike Farrell discusses and signs his new book, "Of Mule and Man" at Chaucer's Books, 3321 State St. *Cosponsored by Death Penalty Focus. Mike Farrell's gripping and often hilarious book-tour memoir provides a framework for grassroots civic engagement. "Mike Farrell's Of Mule and Man is a one-of-a-kind American road trip. It's a quite enjoyable ride with an observant and generous friend who is at home crisscrossing the country with a rental hybrid he calls Mule. Farrell travels through both the beautiful and busted landscape from desert to bayou, urban to rural, listening in and arguing silently with conservative talk radio found in even the most remote places, and ending each day at bookstores and community organizations to have conversations with activists, friends, and family who are doing the hard work of social justice in every neighborhood. 'Heroes abound in this world,' Farrell writes. He is one of them." --Walter Mosley, author of The Tempest Tales. "A beautiful and courageous book, an American classic." --Ron Kovic, author of Born on the Fourth of July. In May 2008--shortly after being named by the Los Angeles Times as a "Person of the Year"--Mike Farrell drove himself across the country on a book tour like no other. Networking with political groups (and friends like Joseph Wilson and Valerie Plame), Farrell redefined the very concepts of book touring and "promotion" through a progressive lens. Departing his hometown of Los Angeles with a trusty rental car--a Prius he quickly nicknamed "Mule"--as his only companion, Mike provides here a funny and fascinating account of his road trip across the country and back. In addition to his (and occasionally Mule's) musings are statements from some of the political groups that cosponsored his tour, including Death Penalty Focus, the ACLU, Greenpeace, Human Rights Watch, and many more.

"Mis Tres Caras/My Three Faces/Shalosh Panim" Opening Reception in conjunction with Portraits of Survival. No charge. CONNECTING HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS AND HISPANIC YOUTH. Portraits of Survival and Collaborative Communities Foundation have embarked on a groundbreaking pilot program linking local Hispanic youth with Holocaust survivors. The six-week program, "Mis Tres Caras/My Three Faces/Shalosh Panim," begins with dialogue between the two groups about their personal stories—past, present and future. The youth then offer their own personal stories of survival in the face of adversity through depictions in visual, performance and other creative arts. "Mis Tres Caras" builds on Portraits of Survival programs, where visitors hear survivors' first-hand accounts of their Holocaust experiences. They visit the interactive photography exhibit depicting the stories of 38 local survivors through narratives and archival images. "Mis Tres Caras" deepens the experience, enabling young people to form relationships and have discussions with survivors, while creating an artistic personal response. The goal is to empower young people to make positive, healthy choices in their lives and in their connections to community. The art, music, film, and performance created as a result of the participants' encounter with Holocaust survivors will be featured at an Opening Reception and program on June 28, 4-6 pm, at the Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center. The community is invited to participate in a dialogue between the youth and survivors.
