SLO: Tonight the Central Coast Watercolor Society offers a demonstration in Chinese Painting at 7 pm in the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, 1010 Broad Street. The ancient art of Chinese brush painting, is deceptively simple, where a few deft but bold strokes can evoke the essence of the subject matter. . In the traditional style, the instructor offers sumi ink and water color on rice paper. Her meditative paintings have been selected for numerous judged shows as well as solo ones. The Museum of Art is located at 1010 Broad Street San Luis Obispo.

Avila: This Sunday is Pops By The Sea, when the San Luis Obispo Symphony turns the Avila Beach golf course into a concert hall for a family-friendly, community concert event that has become a Central Coast tradition. On Sunday, September 5th, the San Luis Obispo Symphony presents "Pops a la Playa!"  and features Brazilian singer and guitarist Teka at the Avila Beach Golf Resort. Gates open at 2:30 pm with a pre-concert family festival and the concert begins at 4 pm. For tickets: Symphony office at (805) 543-3533.

United Way: United Way is looking for volunteers in San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles to teach sessions in financial stability and independence to high school students. Junior Achievement use the Financial Planning Program developed by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE), which covers budgeting, saving, credit, investing, identity theft and insurance for five consecutive weekly sessions.  During each lesson, students learn about key terms and concepts, and apply their new knowledge to a group activity or game. Volunteer teams teach each session, bringing their own personal knowledge and experience to the classroom, ideal candidates will have first-hand knowledge and experience with sound financial practices (a career in banking or the financial industry is especially applicable), be comfortable presenting to high school seniors, and will be available for a one hour orientation and five hour-long classes.  Contact Rachel Cementina at (805) 541-1234 or rcementina@unitedwayslo.org for more information or to volunteer.

S. Barbara: Plan ahead for the Fifth Annual Scrabble Night for Literacy on September 24. Do you love to play Scrabble? Use your word skills at a fundraiser to help struggling readers at the Fifth Annual Scrabble Night for Literacy at the Santa Barbara Public Library on Friday evening, September 24, benefiting the Library System’s volunteer literacy tutoring programs. Registration opens at 6 p.m. and play begins at 6:30 p.m.  The family-oriented event is open to all players from beginners to experts. There’s no need to bring your own partner! In this friendly game night, each entrant is paired against another player at the same level; it’s as competitive (or non-competitive) as you want to be!  Admission is $20 if paid in advance and $25 at the door. S. Maria: The Toastmasters Nina Club in Santa Maria announces their Open House at Merrill Gardens, located at 1350 Suey Road this Thursday at noon.  The keynote Speaker is David Baskett, an investor/promoter for the fire fighting water bomber aircraft that is being considered for fighting fires throughout the Central Coast and all of California. Everyone is welcome to the open house this Thursday at noon in Santa Maria.

Shandon: Mark your calendars for: Saturday evening, September 18th at 7:00P.M., when members of the New World Baroque Orchestra and guest soloists perform in a benefit concert for Mission San Miguel restoration, hosted by Judge William Clark and his family, at their beautiful private chapel, Chapel Hill, in Shandon. The evening begins with a “getting to know you” pre-show social hour at 6:00 P.M.  light refreshments are available.  The main program begins in the chapel at 7:00 P.M. Proceeds from this gala event benefit the continued restoration of the local treasured, historical Mission San Miguel Arcángel. The Chapel is 17 mi. east of Paso Robles on Hwy. 46, turn left on McMillan Road just before reaching Shandon and follow the signs about 1-1/4  mi. to the parking area.  Shuttle buses take guests up to the Chapel (805) 239-3022 or (805) 467-2131, or: www.newworldbaroque.org .

S. Ynez:  Cachuma Lake County Park offers outdoor programs for the whole family in a beautiful setting amidst oak woodland in the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County. There’s a special Labor Day Weekend Fireside program on Friday September 3rd, when park Naturalist Melissa Kelly gives an overview of the wildlife around the Lake and in the campground at 8 pm, Saturday Sept 4 is Astronomy night from 8 to 10 pm when the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit offers a fun and interesting presentation on celestial highlights. After the presentation telescopes are available for viewing the night sky. And Monday, Sept 6 is a Free Fishing Day with no license required.
Cachuma Lake offers year-round camping, boating, fishing, bird watching, a hands-on nature center, and a general store. The whole family can enjoy Wildlife Cruises and Nature Walks, for the kids, there’s a Jr. Rangers program and a “hands on” Nature Center.  For details www.cachuma.com.
