S. Margarita: This weekend the Pacific Coast Railroad Roundup offers a day of family fun with train rides, exhibits, entertainment, railroad art, food and souvenirs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Santa Margarita Ranch. Former Disneyland passenger coaches pulled by vintage steam locomotives offer rides. Monty Mills and His Lucky Horseshoe Band entertain. Santa Margarita Ranch is at Yerba Buena Avenue in Santa Margarita where volunteers have organized and are staffing this fourth-annual community event to celebrate SLO County’s railroad heritage. Proceeds benefit the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum’s efforts to refurbish a museum site in San Luis Obispo’s historic railroad district. Cambria; Camp Ocean Pines in Cambria offers an open house tomorrow so that you can see the facilities that are available for summer camps for the kids. From 10am to 1pm Saturday you can enjoy a free barbecue, take a tour and meet summer camp staff. On that day only when parents sign their kids up for camp they’ll receive a sizable discount. SLO: The Family Care Network’s 5th annual Miracle Miles for Kids, a 10k walk/run benefiting foster and high-needs children, youth and families served by the Family Care Network is this Saturday, May 10th, with the 6.2 mile course running along the water’s edge from Morro Rock to the Cayucos Pier. Miracle Miles for Kids has something for everyone—from serious athletes trying to beat their personal bests to parents looking for something fun the whole family can enjoy. Walk-up registration begins at 6:00am. Registration fees are $45. The post-race party starts at 9:00am near the Cayucos pier and will include live music by Still Time, lunch, a diverse vendor fair with children’s activities and a lively award ceremony. SLO: This Saturday at the Mission Plaza in downtown San Luis Obispo is the 12th annual Birth and Baby Fair from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM. You can celebrate Mother’s Day weekend with fellow Central Coast families and moms-to-be during the Birth and Baby Fair, Central Coast organizations distribute information about their services for birthing moms and new babies; for more info: www.bbrn.org.

Atascadero: This Sunday is Mother’s Day and the San Luis Obispo Symphony celebrates with the Mother’s Day “Music of the Masters” in the United Methodist Church in Atascadero from 3 to 5 pm. The location is at 11605 El Camino Real in Atascadero and the Mother’s Day concert features the Symphony's finest musicians. S. Barbara: Next week on Monday May 12  UCSB Arts & Lectures presents award-winning photographer Joel Meyerowitz, a Distinguished Visiting Fellow in the UCSB College of Creative Studies, who gives an illustrated lecture titled “Inside the ‘Forbidden City’ – Eight Months Photographing Ground Zero” at 8 pm in UCSB Campbell Hall. Meyerowitz’s recently-released book Aftermath is an extraordinary archive of Ground Zero after the attacks on the World Trade Center. SLO: Plan ahead for the May 18th, 2008 Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl For Kids’ Sake fundraiser at the Mustang Lanes on the Cal Poly Campus from 3 to 7pm.  100% of the event proceeds go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO County, a non-profit which benefits disadvantaged children in our community. To participate, bowlers collect pledges totaling a minimum of $75. Bowlers who attend will receive food, drink, t-shirts, bowling and the opportunity to receive fabulous prizes! Ojai: The 9th Annual village of Tales, Ojai Storytelling Festival is in full storytelling mode now and continuing through Sunday the 4th, 2008. www.villageoftales.org or 646-8907. Tellers: Charlotte Blake-Alston, David Holt, Andy Irwin, Kevin Kling, Bill Lepp, Dovie Thomason, and Kuniko Yamamoto. The festival is best suited for families with children ages 6 and older.    Kuniko Yamamoto brings her beautiful Japanese kimono dress, large-scale origami work, musical accompaniment on the Koto and mesmerizing storytelling straight from the Ojai Festival to San Luis Obispo on Sunday afternoon. Kuniko has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Disney Epcot Japanese Pavilion and now you can enjoy her inventive and theatrical performance on Sunday at 3:30 pm in the Temple Beth David on Los Osos Valley Road near Foothill Blvd. For tickets, 544-0760. The shows are $10 for adults but free for all children under 18.

SLO: The month of May is Bike Month in San Luis Obispo County. You can join in activities for the 3rd annual Commuter Bike Challenge, which runs the entire month of May or find any other ways to shift from driving to cycling. With warmer weather it’s easier to incorporate more cycling and walking into our routines. Atascadero: This Saturday in Atascadero is WaterFest 2008 where you can enjoy the county fair like atmosphere of exhibitor booths, hands on activities, music and lots of fun for the whole family from 10 am to 4:30 pm at the Atascadero Sunken Gardens. The special day includes ways to educate and entertain everyone about the importance of appreciating and carefully managing our water usage. www.slowaterfest.org.

Atascadero: Beginning at 2 pm in Atascadero this Saturday May 3 is the program, Nourishing Notes, when High school musicians from San Luis Obispo County perform a concert to benefit the Loaves and Fishes food bank. You are encouraged to bring a bag of non-perishable food items to the concert held at St. William's church in Atascadero and to hear skillful chamber groups play classical, jazz and more. St. William's address: 6410 Santa Lucia Rd. Atascadero, the concert begins at 2 o'clock Saturday.

Avila: This Saturday is the Avila Beach Health and Wellness Fair at the Avila Beach Community Center located at 191 San Miguel St. The Wellness Fair is from 10am-1pm.and is a free open house event featuring demonstrations, product samples, and education from a variety of organizations in SLO County. The Health and Wellness Fair aims to teach self care practices, motivate positive health behavior changes and increase awareness of available health related services and resources in SLO County.  You are welcome to join in on a fun walk along the Bob Jones Trail from 9am-10am. Meet in front of the community center at 9am Saturday for the walk.

Cambria: This weekend in Cambria is a very special Gathering of the Gardeners, from hardcore horticulturalists to those who simply like to smell the flowers, everyone is invited. It’s the Fourth Annual Gathering of Gardeners at Cambria Pines Lodge offering gardening seminars, demonstrations, workshops, food and wine tasting events, entertainment and tours of outstanding local gardens. Informational booths feature everything from garden art and compost demonstrations to lavender products and exotic plants. Cambria: This Sunday at the Hamlet in Cambria, the famous jazz artist series presents its annual salute to the college jazz music departments on the central coast. Combos from Cuesta Community college under the direction of Ron McCarly and from Cal Poly, directed by Paul Rinzler, will perform at 4:00 with proceeds from the concert going to both music departments.
