SLO: Tomorrow at noon in the Steynberg Gallery in San Luis Obispo, you can learn about international affairs from members of the Sierra Club and Cal Poly. The Tuesday Tea and Talk at 12 program features participants from the Smart Energy European Tour with "Empower" Poly and the Sierra club sharing their experiences about what's happening in the world. S. Barbara: Tomorrow night at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara, economist Jeffrey Sachs and humanitarian Greg Mortenson discuss equitable global prosperity
and education at 7 pm. UCSB Arts & Lectures presents authors Jeffrey Sachs, Director of The Earth Institute and Columbia University professor and Greg Mortenson, Co-founder of the nonprofit Central Asia Institute and co-author of the national best-selling book Three Cups of Tea. Mortenson has helped more than 25,000 children in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan receive quality education and established more than 61 schools. Newsman Tom Brokaw calls Mortenson’s work, “proof that one ordinary person… really can change the world.”
The authors each give a 45-minute presentation followed by an onstage conversation. Jeffrey Sachs and Greg Mortenson are presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures as part of the “Alleviating Global Poverty Event Series.” Admission is $10 for the general public and $8 for UCSB students with valid ID. SLO: This Saturday is the Senior Nutrition Program of San Luis Obispo County’s First Annual Dinner/Auction called “Night of a Million Meals!” The Gala Event is held at the Madonna Inn on Saturday, May 17th at 5:30pm. The Madonna Inn serves a four-course meal with complimentary wines provided by local wineries. A Live and Silent Auction highlight the evening with all proceeds to benefit the Senior Nutrition Program. The Senior Nutrition Program of SLO County provides meals for seniors with a goal of prolonging their health and ability to remain independent. 140,000 hot noontime meals are provided per year to seniors throughout SLO County, delivered five times a week directly to the recipient’s homes as well as to nine community lunch sites throughout the county. A network of 225 volunteers participate and many personally visit homebound seniors offering social contact as well as emergency or family assistance when necessary. Paso Robles: This Saturday in Paso Robles you can get your car washed and support the Relay For Life Fundraiser from 9am to 4pm. Team Camp Roberts holds a Car Wash at Sunset North Car Wash (709 9th Street Paso Robles), raising money for the Relay For Life Event to donate to the American Cancer Society. Your car gets cleaned on Saturday and 15% of all money generated through the car wash that day is donated to the team and is then submitted to the American Cancer Society.
Lompoc: On Saturday night the Lompoc Civic Theatre offers an Exclusive Benefit Performance of: A Murder Mystery Dinner/Theater in the Lompoc Public Library. Relax – if you are able – for a murder mystery and evening of “fun” among the book stacks for “Southern Fried Murder” by Dennis Headrick & Paul Thornton. Saturday night at 6:30 the Grossman Gallery in the Lompoc Public Library opens, dinner begins at 7 pm. The Library is located at 501. E. North Avenue. Theater among the stacks begins at 8 pm. Templeton: The 5th Annual Pinot and Paella Cook-Off featuring 16 Chefs and 20 Paso Pinot Noir Producers are scheduled for Sunday, June 8th 2008 at the Templeton Community Park, this year. Tickets are on sale now, the event is held from 2-5pm with the proceeds benefiting the Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation. For tickets and more information, the website is www.pinotandpaella.com. The 5th Annual Pinot and Paella Cook-off features delights of the Spanish beat, paella, live music and dance. 16 chefs compete in a friendly competition in several categories judged by local celebrities and attendees in the coveted “Peoples Choice Award”. 20 Pinot Noir Producers from Paso Robles complement the Paella competition. This year’s festival includes live music by Incendio, and a Salsa dance exposition. The Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation makes training in the arts available to all children in the community through drama, music, dance and other creative venues.

Santa Ynez: The American Lung Association of California hosts the 27th annual "Breathe Easy Ride" fundraising bike ride through the Santa Ynez Valley. The 3-day ride begins on Friday, June 27 at Hans Christensen Anderson Park in Solvang and continues through Sunday the 29th. The one day ride is on Saturday June 28th.The fundraiser “Breathe Easy Ride” allows you to ride at your own pace as an individual or on a team past famous wineries and ranches on a 30 mile or a 50 mile scenic bike trail. There is overnight camping available at the historic Midland School with live music and great stargazing. Great food and fun themed cycling rest stops are provided every ten miles. SLO: This Wednesday is the Introduction to Computers class on the topic of Microsoft Word at the KCBXnet Training Center. The four session class is offered from 7 to 9 pm this month. The KCBXnet Training Center is located at 4100 Vachell Lane and offers a classroom with dozens of student computers and a teacher’s station with a projector for instruction. S. Barbara: This Wednesday night UCSB Arts and Lectures presents the Latin Grammy-winning singer Lila Downs, for an evening of eclectic Mexican music in UCSB Campbell Hall. The concert begins at 8 pm, when you can enjoy the talent of this three-octave range mezzo-soprano whose stage presence and performance are unlike most singers. Lila Downs has been described as seductively layering the strong undercurrent of emotion behind blues and jazz with honky-tonk swing and romantic boleros. With smoldering passion and earth and fire vocals, Downs’ affecting songs burrow deep into the heart and mind, invoking lost loves, legends and struggles to live. SLO: This Friday in San Luis Obispo, Hospice offers training in supportive grief counseling for both professionals and community members from 8:30 am to 4 pm. The training is held at the Hospice office at 1304 Pacific Street. Continuing education units are available for Marriage and Family Therapists and Social Workers for an additional fee. The cost of the training is $45 and includes a prize winning manual. Participants will deepen their understanding of the bereavement process and enhance their skills and tools to provide grief support to others. A panel presentation explores a range of losses and transformations. Spiritual aspects of grief will be introduced, and participants will be supported in a personal exploration of self-care.
