Fred Friedman

Host of Jazz Liner Notes

Fred Friedman has been a resident of the Central Coast since 1973.  He taught at Cal Poly in the College of Engineering for 25 years, retiring in 2001 as Professor Emeritus.  He now has an ideal retirement job, working part time at Boo Boo Records in San Luis Obispo.

Fred is a lifelong music lover, and has taught music appreciation classes through the San Luis Obispo County Library.  He is a charter member of the San Luis Obispo County Jazz Federation and served on their Board of Directors for over 15 years.  He has also served on the Board of Directors of the San Luis Obispo Symphony.  Over the years Fred has promoted many concerts in San Luis Obispo, bringing performing artists such as Bill Frisell, Scott Amendola, John Scofield, Jenny Scheinman, Charlie Hunter and many others.

For 17 years Fred served on the Pismo Beach Fire Department, and retired as the Assistant Fire Chief for the city.  He also volunteered with the San Luis Obispo Literacy Council for 10 years tutoring adults in reading, writing and speaking English.

Fred has hosted Jazz Liner Notes on KCBX since 1979.  He says it continues to be a lot of fun.
