Cal Poly students plan to rally for statewide tuition freeze at CSU schools

ASI, Cal Poly

Cal Poly students are planning a protest rally for this coming Monday in concert with students on several other CSU campuses.

It's part of an organized effort to freeze tuition rates.

The group Students for Quality Education said it wants the CSU system to return to the California Master Plan and its promise of tuition-free higher education for all.

Erica Hudson is the spokesperson for the Cal Poly group and told KCBX that she understands her campus is considered more conservative and reluctant to demonstrate. But, she said the time is right to call for change.

"I think students are just really frustrated with how things are being handled and they're trying to take agency in their own education," said Hudson. "I think that the students that aren't doing that just aren't aware of what's happening and are getting caught up and busy in the life of being a college student."

University spokesperson Matt Lazier said in a statement to KCBX that "Cal Poly is pleased its students are passionate about their education and willing to speak their minds about maintaining its quality."

Lazier also said a CSU education "remains one of the most affordable options" and Cal Poly offers one of the "best returns on investment."

Campuses where students plan to hold rallies in the coming days include:

  • Chico State, Monday, May 2 at 12:00 p.m.
  • San Francisco State, Monday, May 2 at 12:00 p.m.
  • CSU Stanislaus, Monday, May 2 at 11:30 a.m.
