Cambria's emergency water project gets $13,000 in county fees waived

Randol White

The ongoing project to bring an emergency water supply to the Cambria area got unanimous support from the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

Fees totaling $13,293 were waived for a Coastal Development Permit, needed by the Cambria Community Services District (CCSD) to move forward with their plans for a permanent solution to the area's ongoing water woes.

Local residents and business owners have been divided over the Emergency Water Supply Project, but at tuesday's county meeting the majority of public speakers were clearly in favor of it. Many wore blue shirts that said C4 H20, indicating the pro-water facility group Cambrians For Water.

The project pumps treated brackish water back into the ground to recharge the districts well field. When finished, it's expected to increase Cambria's water supply by 250 acre-feet annually.

The California Coastal Commission could ultimately override the project should residents file appeals and if environmental infractions were to be found.

The group Cambrians For Change were hoping the CCSD would choose a different option for increasing the district's supply which involved building a reservoir in the area.
