The Federal Bureau of Investigation has initiated a civil rights inquiry at the San Luis Obispo County Jail.
Los Angeles field office spokesperson Laura Eimiller confirmed Tuesday that FBI agents have opened an investigation upon the request of Sheriff Ian Parkinson.
After an inmate died in custody in April, Parkinson said at a press conference he planned to ask the FBI to conduct an independent investigation into jail operations.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division in Washington DC made a determination to conduct the investigation, Eimiller told KCBX News, and no charges have been filed at this stage.
