A federal lawsuit is being filed against the University of California System this week on behalf of a former UC Santa Barbara student.
The Title IX Civil lawsuit against the Regents of the University of California alleges UCSB did not properly investigate a reported sexual assault last year.
Alex Zalkin is an attorney with the Zalkin Law Firm, representing the former student. He said she reported she was sexually assaulted by a fellow UCSB student.
"And the school...did virtually nothing in response, which we're alleging is a violation of Title IX, which is a federal law that requires schools to respond to reports of sexual assault and sexual harassment," said Zalkin.
Rebecca Trounson, spokesperson with the University of California Office of the President and said the System cannot comment on the suit, as it's yet to be filed. She said the UC System is not immune to sexual assault, but it takes a comprehensive approach to address sexual violence.
Trounson said that in recent years, the UC System has implemented a series of recommendations from a sexual assault task force set forth by President Janet Napolitano.
The law firm and the former UCSB Student will be hosting a conference in Santa Barbara on Thursday to announce the filing of the suit.
