High surf hits Central Coast beaches

Greg Perry

Waves up to 11 feet are expected along the San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County coastlines through Thursday night. The National Weather Service based in Oxnard has issued a high surf advisory for the west and northwest facing beaches along this stretch.

The coastal event will create "strong and dangerous" rip currents within the surf zone according to meteorologists.  The situation can be dangerous for those who venture onto coastal rocks and jetties, as rogue waves can unexpectedly wash people into the surf.

Experts recommend swimming parallel with the shore if you are caught in a rip current.

Localized beach erosion is also expected over the next few days.
