Issues and Ideas: Our Oceans, Our Coasts

Broadcast date: 3/5/2015

There are more than three hundred miles of ocean along the Central Coast of California, between Santa Cruz and Carpinteria.

The ocean is of critical importance to the Central Coast way of life. It serves our community in many different ways— as a source of food, recreation, commerce, spiritual health, as well as regulating our climate and sustaining energy production. Its level of importance demonstrates the critical need for understanding our ocean health, the level of change the ocean can sustain and how we can best manage its resources so it will continue to thrive and nurture our communities for many years to come.

Are the oceans healthy? Are our fisheries sustainable? How is climate change affecting our oceans?

Host Kris Kington-Barker is joined by guests Douglas McCauley, Assistant Professor at UCSB in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology, as well as Crow White and Dean Wendt, both professors at Cal Poly in the Biological Sciences Department. Dean Wendt is also the Director of the Center for Coastal Marine Sciences and Executive Director of SLOSEA. They will discuss the consequences of climate change, industrialization, and overfishing on ocean health and marine ecosystems.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Kris Kington-Barker is co-host of Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday on KCBX from 1:00—12:00 p.m. Kris has worked in healthcare fields ranging from mental health to hospital administration, and has served as a volunteer and board member for many Central Coast non-profit organizations.
