Portion of Highway 101 named for John Steinbeck

A stretch of Highway 101 in the Salinas Valley will soon be renamed as the "John Steinbeck Highway."

The new road signs were unveiled Monday at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas. Monterey County Assemblyman Luis Alejo authored the legislation responsible for the name change.

Dr. Susan Shillinglaw is the Center's Director and said the highway signs will be big, announcing to travelers that they're in "Steinbeck Country."

"This will sort of celebrate that sense of journey. Steinbeck himself loved journeys-- Grapes of Wrath, Travels with Charley. He loved automobiles. He loved cars. He loved movement. He was restless," said Shillinglaw. "For all those reasons the highway is the perfect way to celebrate the legacy of John Steinbeck."

Under that same resolution, another portion of 101 in the valley will be renamed as the "Gateway to the Pinnacles Highway."
