Public comment sought at Diablo Canyon closure hearings

This week there is a key event related to the proposed closure of the Diablo Canyon Power Plant in San Luis Obispo County. The state agency with jurisdiction over utility power plants is the California Public Utilities Commission. On Thursday, the CPUC is holding two hearings in at the Luckwick Community Center in San Luis Obispo - one in the early afternoon and another in the evening - to hear public comment on the proposed closure.

In 2016, plant owner Pacific Gas and Electric  (PG&E) announced it would not seek to renew the nuclear power plant's operating license, and plans to shutter the plant by 2025. While those opposed to nuclear power celebrated, others organized to fight the closure.

To hear more perspective on the closure proposal and process, we invited guests to the KCBX studio with opposing viewpoints on nuclear power and Diablo: Dr. Gene Nelson of the non-profit Californians for Green Nuclear Power and two members of the San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace, Jane Swanson and Linda Seely.

To learn more about what Dr. Nelson from Californians for Green Nuclear Power spoke about, visit the website cgng.org. To find more information about Mothers for Peace and their efforts, visit mothersforpeace.org.

The Ludwick Community Center is located at 864 Santa Rosa Street, San Luis Obispo, CA. 93401. The CPUC hearings are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
