Issues & Ideas: 'Ballet Unbound'

Performing Arts Center, San Luis Obispo
MAC's upcoming dance performance in San Luis Obispo will focus on the theme of overcoming barriers.

A San Luis Obispo dance company is about to debut its fall season of performances. The mission of Movement Arts Collective is to “enhance the artistic landscape of the local and regional community through dance performance, education, and outreach, building both the artists and the audiences of the future.” Their upcoming contemporary ballet and modern dance performance titled "Ballet Unbound,” on November 15 and 17, is set to live music and showcases three works focused on the theme of overcoming barriers.

KCBX’s Tyler Pratt recently sat down with the collective’s founders—Ryan and Maartje Lawrence—to talk about their international careers, what brought them to the Central Coast and the inspiration behind their work. Maartje’s piece pulls from her own experiences immigrating to United States, and Ryan will unveil a new co-production with Festival Mozaic titled "In the Middle Range," set to two of Bach’s famed cello suites.
