SLO locals demonstrate support for transgender service members

Los Osos resident Carroll Leslie joined the protest.

Local activists took to the front lawn of the San Luis Obispo Veteran’s Hall Monday afternoon to protest President Trump’s tweet suggesting a ban on transgender people serving in the military.

Among the organizers and speakers were local church leaders, including Reverend Jason Sisk-Provencio of the United Church of Christ. Sisk-Provencio said he attended the demonstration because  he supports the LGBTQ and military members of his congregation, and also to publicly show that there is a religious community in San Luis Obispo to support LGBTQ people.

“I’m here because I’m a member of the LGBTQ community,” Sisk-Provencio said. “I’ve known people who definitely are hesitant to fully embrace and support the LGBTQ community. But then we have wonderful clergy here today who affirm everyone without reservation.”

In a statement issued July 27, Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said the Defense Department was making no changes to current policy regarding transgender service members until the White House issues formal guidance beyond a tweet. White also says the department will continue to “ensure all service members are treated with respect.”
