Man arrested for bringing knives, ammo, Airsoft gun to Santa Barbara courthouse
A 26-year-old Santa Barbara man is facing felony charges for bringing restricted items to the county courthouse on Monday.
A Santa Barbara County Sheriff's bailiff spotted a suspicious backpack during a security sweep Monday around noon. Deputies searched it and said they found an Airsoft gun, two knives and ammunition.
The backpack was under a bench in the hallway outside the screening area for Superior Court Anacapa Division, Dept. 5.
Brian Charles Ruiz, who was at the Santa Barbara Courthouse to attend a gang injunction hearing—and was wearing a t-shirt opposing the gang injunction— was arrested and charged with felony possession of the items, according to sheriff's spokesperson Kelly Hoover.
Ruiz was transported to the Santa Barbara County Jail and is being held on $20,000 bail. Deputies say he has known gang affiliations.
