Cal Poly dorm project moves closer to breaking ground

Cal Poly

Cal Poly has moved one step closer to breaking ground on its nearly 1475 bed dormitory with approval of the project's environmental impact report (EIR).

The California State University Board of Trustees approved the EIR at is meeting in Long Beach on Wednesday. The project still requires board approval for the final design before construction can begin, but is on track with the university's timeline.

The dorms have been a source of concern for people living in the adjacent Alta Vista neighborhood, with residents apprehensive about increased noise and rowdy student activity on their streets.

About 200 people showed up to a San Luis Obispo City Council meeting in March asking members to help negotiate a new location with university officials. In the end though, San Luis Obispo City Council members agreed only to send a letter to Cal Poly reflecting comments from that meeting.
