San Luis Obispo County says it is moving forward with the largest energy efficiency retrofit in county history after a unanimous vote by the Board of Supervisors Tuesday.
The move is expected to save more than a quarter million dollars annually in energy costs and an additional $76,000 in operational and maintenance savings.
The County says it will off-set it's carbon footprint, by nearly 700 metric tons per year, the equivalent of removing 151 cars from the road, or planting about 31,000 trees.
Jon Griesser, Supervisor of Energy and Climate Programs said the project will cut down on government greenhouse gas emissions nearly 11 percent from 2013 levels.
"Given that this project is the single largest energy efficiency retrofit project in the history of the county, my assumption is that it's impact is very likely also the single largest reduction in county government greenhouse gas emissions," said Griesser.
The plan involves a partnership with PG&E and involves retrofitting several county-owned facilities.
“PG&E welcomes the opportunity to partner with San Luis Obispo County on this ambitious energy efficiency program,” said Pat Mullen, PG&E’s local division director in a statement sent to KCBX. “This effort will help the county save money, use less electricity and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Those are real benefits for all of us who live here, made possible by the county’s leadership in finding new ways to become more energy-efficient."
