Harmon edges out Marx for SLO mayor by 47 votes

San Luis Obispo County Public Health

It appears Heidi Harmon is the next mayor of San Luis Obispo. The county’s election office released an updated tally just after 4 pm Wednesday in the closest local race of the recent election. While San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder Tommy Gong has not certified the results, Harmon leads by a margin of 47 votes.

Harmon ran on a platform of expanding affordable housing among other issues. Harmon told KCBX Wednesday afternoon she felt her campaign showed the Central Coast was ready for a new, more progressive leadership.

"I feel really lucky to have been a part of this process regardless of the outcome," Harmon said.

Shortly before the results were announced, Marx said she expected a very close race.

"Well, I would say that whoever does win the office of mayor that it will be important for that person to reach out to the opponent and also to the supporters," Marx said.

On Sunday afternoon, Marx sent out an email to her supporters alerting them that election outcome could go either way. She says she is grateful for her time on the city council and if she doesn’t win reelection, she will look for other ways to contribute to the community.

A San Luis Obispo County elections official said Wednesday evening that all available ballots had been processed, although there is another counting scheduled for Tuesday, November 29 at 2 p.m. Gong's office has 28 days after Election Day to certify the results.
