Housing bills vote postponed

San Luis Obispo County residents will pay more at the county's assessor's office if SB 2 becomes law.

California legislative leaders have delayed votes on a package of housing bills until after Labor Day weekend.

Capitol Bureau Chief Ben Adler says Democratic lawmakers were preparing to vote Friday on up to a dozen measures – including a four billion dollar housing bond and a document fee on real estate transactions.

"The official reason for the delay is that an Assembly Democrat was absent – and with Republicans unanimously opposed, every Democrat must vote Yes for those two revenue-generating measures to reach the two-thirds supermajorities required for passage," Adler said. "But the sense behind the scenes is that backers of the real estate fee still don’t have enough support yet to get the bill through.”

The housing bills will top lawmakers’ agenda when they return to the Capitol on Tuesday. Only nine workdays remain before lawmakers adjourn for the year on Sept. 15.
