Conductor Nan Washburn

This season, the San Luis Obispo Symphony is auditioning five candidates for the position of music director. Marisa Waddell will speak with each one through May 2017. In this conversation, she chats with conductor Nan Washburn about her vision and ideas for the Symphony, and with David Hamilton, the chairman of the search committee.

Nan Washburn is currently the Music Director of the Michigan Philharmonic and was also appointed the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for the Michigan Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, an ensemble that she founded in 2003. She has also led the West Hollywood Orchestra, Channel Islands Symphony, the Acalanes Chamber Orchestra, the American Jazz Theater, and many others. Washburn first came to national attention as a Co-founder, Artistic Director, and Associate Conductor of the San Francisco-based Women's Philharmonic from 1980 to 1990. She was awarded the American Prize of Orchestral Conducting and 19 ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming from the League of American Orchestras. Washburn earned her Bachelors of Music Degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and earned her Master's Degree in performance from the New England Conservatory of Music.
