Since 2010 the County of San Luis Obispo has seen a marked increase in the number of people with disabilities. ACTION reported in 2013 at least 14% of survey respondents either had a permanent physical or mental disability that substantially limited a major life activity, or there was someone in their household who did.
Although many would consider access for people with disabilities as a civil right, too often people with disabilities are treated as a social minority. However, there are a number of professionals and organizations located on the Central Coast that are dedicated to removing barriers and increasing opportunities for people with disabilities.
Host Kris Kington-Barker is joined by guests Dr. Kevin Taylor, Department Chair of the Kinesiology Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, as well as the creator and director of Activity4All (A4A) a Cal Poly STRIDE Program, Mark Shaffer, Executive Director of United Cerebral Palsy of San Luis Obispo County and county founder of Ride-On Transportation, and John Lee, MS, OTR/L, ATP with the Central Coast Assistive Technology Center, as well as a member of Access-for-All to discuss the issue of equal access and how we can create a more inclusive community.
Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX.
