Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian set to announce run for Congress

The office of Central Coast Assemblymember Katcho Achadjian (R-San Luis Obispo) said Thursday that the politician plans to announce his bid on Friday for the 24th Congression District seat being vacated by Rep. Lois Capps (D-Santa Barbara) next fall.

Achadjian's announcement is scheduled to take place at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, Sunken Gardents at 11:00 a.m., with the Assemblymember flanked by numerous local Republican leaders.

Achadjian, whose 35th State Assembly District includes San Luis Obispo County and a portion of northern Santa Barbara County, will need to make his name known to those along the South Coast.

The list of prominent figures helping Achadjian introduce himself to this part of the 24th District includes former Assembly Member and Santa Barbara County Supervisor Brooks Firestone, current Supervisor Steve Lavagnino, Santa Barbara Councilmember Frank Hotchkiss, and others.

Achadjian is in his third and final Assembly session, as term limits would keep him from running for his seat again in 2016.

Capps announced her retirement plans last week and since then, there has been a growing field of candidates to take her spot. As of Thursday morning, that list includes Democrats Helene Schneider and Salud Carbajal. On the Republican side, Achadjian will contend with Justin Fareed, who ran for the seat during the primaries in 2014.
