Broken gas line shuts down stretch of State Street in Santa Barbara

Businesses and roads opened Tuesday afternoon after a gas line break in Santa Barbara shut down a portion of the lower State Street area.

Traffic along lower State Street was brought to a halt while a broken gas line was brought under control Tuesday afternoon.

The Santa Barbara Fire Department said a construction crew severed the one inch line around 11:30 a.m. while working on a building renovation project.

Traffic on State Street was halted in both directions at East Yanonali Street for nearly two hours, as was rail traffic along the nearby Union Pacific tracks.

The city said the gas line was brought under control around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
