Cachuma Lake closed during search for possible drowning victim

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department

Boating at Cachuma Lake was closed Saturday while the Sheriff’s Dive Team searched for a missing 22-year-old man who was last seen going underwater Friday night, just before 8:00 p.m.

The search was suspended Saturday afternoon because of poor underwater viability, but Santa Barbara County park rangers will continue to do surface patrols of the area.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department said in a media release that divers reached a depth of 80 feet under zero visibility conditions.

A representative from the Cachuma Lake Recreation Area indicated on Sunday morning that there were no immediate plans to close the lake again this weekend.

The identity of the victim is not being released at this time.

A visitor to the Cachuma Lake Recreation Area called 9-1-1 Friday night to report a boat about 50 yards offshore, at the north end of the Dakota Plains camping area, with a male waving his arms in distress and two people in the water.

Rangers responded on a patrol boat, according to the sheriff's department, and discovered one man struggling in the water. They were able to rescue him, but were unable to locate the other man.
