Cal Poly's stem cell program gets $2.6 million grant to move forward

Cal Poly, Dennis Steers

Cal Poly recently received a five-year, $2.6 million grant for its regenerative medicine program from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM).

The money will specifically be used to create more masters-level stem cell scientists.

Spokesperson for the College of Engineering, Amy Hewes, said Friday that there's a shortage of qualified stem cell scientists in the field right now.

"This puts Cal Poly at the lead edge of producing very skilled researchers and professionals to go into regenerative medicine," said Hewes.

Cal Poly's program started back in 2009 with a grant from the same organization. Ten students are chosen each year to participate.
