Caregiving issues and strategies

Broadcast date: 10/15/15

In today’s world we are living longer lives, but often are diagnosed with many more complex health conditions. In times of need, individuals often turn to family members for their care and support, and so the numbers of family caregivers is not only increasing, but becoming more challenging too. The National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) estimates 43.5 million adults in the United States have provided unpaid care to an adult or a child in the prior 12 months.

Caregivers are a diverse group and come from every age, gender, socioeconomic, and racial and /or ethic group. Caring for a loved one can hold many positive aspects, but it also comes with its share of struggles. Caring for a loved one can be stressful, tiring and costly and older caregivers, those who have no choice in the role, or ones who face higher needs than others, are especially vulnerable and may have a difficult time meeting the demand.

Join host Kis Kington-Barker as she speaks with Alyce Crawford, Family Consultant with Coast Caregiver Resource Center, Millie Tyler, a caregiver and advocate, and Cathy Brody, a Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice in Paso Robles and Cambria for 30 years, as they talk about the effects of caring for a loved one and the resources available to assist families in their time of need.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Kris Kington-Barker is co-host of Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday on KCBX from 1:00—12:00 p.m. Kris has worked in healthcare fields ranging from mental health to hospital administration, and has served as a volunteer and board member for many Central Coast non-profit organizations.
