Central Coast DMV offices suffer computer outage

Work is underway to fix a major computer problem that has services shut down at DMV offices along the Central Coast and throughout the state.

The computer outages started late Monday, and as of Wednesday afternoon, the California Department of Motor Vehicles was still unsure as to when the problem would be fixed.

Spokesperson Jaime Garza told KCBX the outage was caused internally, after failures of their primary and back-up hard disks. He said there’s no indication of anybody hacking into their system.

Garza said nearly 65 percent of all DMV offices in the state have been impacted.

On the Central Coast, DMV offices in King City, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, Lompoc, and Santa Barbara were affected by the issue.

The problems differ from location to location, but along the Central Coast, the vehicle registration process is down, making it unavailable. The offices can still handle drivers licence and ID requests however.

Also, the computer issue is only affecting some DMV field offices. Online services are still available.
