Central Coast Voices: Great Futures for Youth

Broadcast date: 7/19/2018

Parents are often confronted with significant barriers to obtaining high quality child care. Among these obstacles are often low wages and high costs.  Quality of care varies greatly, and limited or unexperienced providers are frequently an issue. While many working families continue to struggle to afford the cost of care, a growing body of research shows that quality child care is important to the foundational development of children and their potential to thrive. Whether or not we help working parents in their struggle has the potential to impact our communities for years to come.

The Boys & Girls Club of North San Luis Obispo County has changed the lives of young people in our area for more than 22 years. Today, they continue working hard to reach even more children and to assist families throughout the community. They do this by not only providing a safe, supervised and affordable place for children to go every day, during the summer and after school, but also by providing the environment and experiences kids need to succeed. Their mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need them most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring responsible citizens.

Join host Kris Kington-Barker as she speaks with Jeremy Deming, CEO with the Boys and Girls Club of North SLO County, Meghan Harris, Director of Operations and Sarah Cardinali, Unit Director of the Atascadero Club as they discuss how they strive to provide high-quality programs throughout summer and after school to meet the academic, social and physical needs of local children and their plans for the future.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Kris Kington-Barker is co-host of Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday on KCBX from 1:00—12:00 p.m. Kris has worked in healthcare fields ranging from mental health to hospital administration, and has served as a volunteer and board member for many Central Coast non-profit organizations.
