A study being done at Cal Poly this summer will look at how pool owners can reduce the amount of water that evaporates each day.
Pool covers are the main focus of this study, including bubble tarps and even chemicals that reduce evaporation.
The National Plasterers Council is a trade association made up of swimming pool industry professionals.
Nearly a decade ago, the group built several pools for research on the campus. Alan Smith is the organization's research director and says the drought was one of many reasons for the study.
"Every little bit helps," said Smith. "If we can save, in the scheme of things, a little water but seemingly millions and millions...of gallons by simply covering pools, then why not do it?"
The 60-day comparative study will begin next week.
