Tom Wilmer

Award-winning film director and screenwriter, Max Barbakow grew up in Santa Barbara, California and graduated from The Thatcher School in nearby Ojai in 2007.

Barbakow instinctively knew at an early age that the art of story telling expressed through the written word and videography was where his passion lay.

While an undergraduate at Yale, Barbakow made time to delve in to the cultures of the far corners of the world. Join correspondent, Tom Wilmer and Max Barbakow in Santa Barbara for a journey of discovery where we’ll learn how Barbakow's world travels and encounters expanded his life vision and enhanced his art and craft, as a script writer, and an award-winning film director.

Barbakow melds the visual experience with a keen sensitivity for amplifying tales through powerful soundscapes.

Barbakow’s second film, The Duke, produced while a Directing Fellow at the American Film Institute, has garnered numerous accolades, including “Best Student Film” at the Pasadena Film Festival. The Duke has also been featured at numerous film festivals, including Tribeca Film Festival, Taos, Vail, Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and the Cannes Film Festival.
