Former US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to speak at UCSB

The first woman appointed to the U-S Supreme Court will speak on the UCSB campus this Saturday at a free event that is open to the public.

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor will give a talk titled "Educating for Democracy in a Digital Age."

Wade Clark Roof is the director of the Walter H. Capps Center for the Study of Ethics, Religion, and Public Life and says O'Connor's focus this weekend should be engaging.

"It's a topic that's very important today, I mean a lot of people are cynical about democracy," said Wade Clark Roof. "I think anything that can be done to change the mood, and get involved, and be an active citizen, is a good thing to do."

The director says he's been trying for a couple of years to get the former justice to speak on campus and was finally able to arrange a date that worked with her O'Connor's schedule.

Sandra Day O'Connor was nominated to the court by President Reagan in 1981 and served nearly 25 years on the bench. She was considered a moderate conservative during the end of her Supreme Court term.
