Haggen likely to close all recently-opened Central Coast stores

Jordan Bell, KCBX News

All Haggen stores throughout California, including several on the Central Coast, will likely be put up for sale as the Washington-based grocery chain looks to exit the area.

Haggen announced Thursday it is asking the Bankruptcy Court for approval to conduct the sale of its stores in the wake of a disappointing effort to launch its brand here back in the spring. The company wants to focus on what it calls its 37 "core" stores in the Pacific Northwest.

The chain said all employees of stores outside that region, which would include the Central Coast, will receive 60 days notice of their store's pending closure.

CENTRAL COAST STORES AFFECTED:

  • Arroyo Grande – West Branch Street
  • Atascadero – El Camino Real
  • Carpintaria – Linden Avenue
  • Goleta – N. Fairview Ave.
  • Goleta – S.Turnpike Rd
  • Lompoc – N H Street
  • Los Osos – Los Osos Valley Rd (announced in Aug.)
  • Paso Robles – E. Creston Rd
  • San Luis Obispo – Johnson Ave
  • San Luis Obispo – Foothill Blvd
  • Santa Barbara – Cliff Dr
  • Santa Barbara – State Street

Haggen purchased 146 stores in five states late last year from Albertsons and Safeway as part of a deal to allow a merger between those two chains. At the time, Haggen only had 18 stores under its name.
This past summer, Haggen sued the other stores for more than $1 billion, saying they made it impossible for Haggen to gain a foothold in the new markets.
