Isla Vista community working toward a riot-free Deltopia weekend

Santa Barbara County Fire

A crackdown by law enforcement will start Thursday night in the Isla Vista area in anticipation of this weekend's Deltopia celebrations.

Safety preparations are coming from several fronts. More than 200 officers from a variety of local agencies and university campuses statewide  are involved with keeping the peace this weekend in Isla Vista.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is among the state schools sending police officers to help control the crowds. Ali Guthy is the President of the Associated Students and said the community has been through a lot in the past 12 months including last year's Deltopia riots.

"The university has really taken the initiative to make sure that happens," Guthy said. "Students acknowledge their responsibility in [participating] in these types of activities but we also are encouraging each other to make sure the event is as safe as possible."

She said the top goal for everyone is to have a smooth event this weekend. Students and law enforcement agree the key to a safe event is controlling the number of visitors attending the non-sanctioned spring break celebration.
