It's Arbor Day in November for the Cal Poly campus

Diego Abeloos

Cal Poly is creating a new tradition to celebrate Arbor Day in the fall, instead of mid March when the State of California recognizes the day.

Early November was chosen here on the Central Coast because it's an ideal time to plant a tree, according to the University.

Cal Poly President Jeffery Armstrong planted a rare conifer from New Zealand on Tuesday. It was grown by students from a clipping.

In addition to the tree planting, the University was presented with the Tree Campus USA award by Cal Fire's John Melvin.

Tree Campus USA is a program run by the Arbor Day Foundation and is based on several standards a campus must meet.

As of Tuesday, Cal Poly joins only eight other schools statewide to receive the designation, three of which are CSUs and two are UCs, however UC Santa Barbara is not among them.
