King City ranked as second most 'financially stressed' municipality in the state

A California-based think tank says King City is the second most financially stressed city in the state. Compton ranked No. 1.

The California Policy Center released its list of the "Unlucky 13" this week saying King City's problems stem from a combination of lowered property and sales tax revenues.

Just this week however, King City likely passed a half-cent sales tax increase which wasn't included as part of the study. Final election numbers have yet to be certified.

Mayor Robert Cullen says he's surprised by the ranking in light of the election and because of budget adjustments, according to a story in the Salinas Californian.

The think tank has a reputation for being biased with a conservative agenda, but a spokesperson Marc Joffe told KCBX, "this study was performed using objective criteria."

The top "stressed" cities in the survey were:

  1. Compton
  2. King City
  3. Sutter Creek
  4. Ione
  5. Maywood
  6. Atwater
  7. Huron
  8. Chico
  9. Calipatria
  10. Ridgecrest
  11. San Fernando
  12. Blythe
  13. Firebaugh
