Local legislators form committee to take action on oil spill

Jessica Paterson

Several state legislators have formed a new committee that plans to take action against future oil spills.

The coastal legislators made the announcement Tuesday morning at the state Capitol. The Senate Select Committee on the Refugio Oil Spill will be chaired by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and vice chaired by Senator Bill Monning.

Jackson says they plan to take further action on May's spill.

"We will be asking questions regarding the spill, what we can and should be doing to make sure situations like this do not occur in the future, and otherwise try to identify ways that we as a legislature can better protect out coastline from these kinds of spills," said Jackson.

They will hold their first hearing with the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources in Santa Barbara later this month.
