Local Red Cross offices seek volunteers from Central Coast communities vulnerable during El Niño

The Red Cross is looking for seasonal volunteers on the Central Coast to train for El Niño storm response.

Jessica Piffero is the Regional Director of Communications for the Red Cross and said they need to prepare people with basic shelter skills, like feeding and fetching supplies.

She said training is focused on communities that are most vulnerable during El Niño storms.

"There's a real concern, if there's a landslide, flooding, roads getting washed out, maybe we're not going to be able to reach a specific community. So we have volunteers who work and live in these communities all over the county and all over the area, those people can respond first and be the first to get there and open up a shelter," said Piffero.

Locations in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo County will hosts training sessions in January.

Red Cross Training for Saturday, January 9, 2016:

  • Red Cross office, 2707 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93105
  • PG&E Facility, 1250 Kendall Road, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

Training takes place from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Lunch is provided.
