March brought big water savings to state, San Luis Obispo

New numbers from the state show Central Coast residents are doing their part to save water.

The State Water Board released its statewide conservation data Tuesday, showing Californians doubled the amount of water savings during the month of March compared to February savings.

The State said even with 2016’s already historic high temperatures, statewide water usage is historically low at 66 residential gallons per person per day.

Miryam Barajas is with the State Water Board and said some cities on the Central Coast are doing even better than that.

“For the City of San Luis Obispo to have 44 gallons per person, that’s a good number," she said. "It shows that they’re conserving water. It shows that when it rains, they’re turning off their irrigation systems. It shows that they’re fixing leaks in their homes and outside their homes, and that they’re not taking any drop of water for granted.”

The water situation around the state is complex, depending on the sources supplying each community. Reservoirs in the north are nearly full, while those in the south are at historic lows.

Public comment around the state is pushing for more localized control over conservation measures. Water Board staff will propose new regulations this month, and if they’re adopted by the Board, they’ll take effect in June.
