March marks the start of Snowy Plover season, docents needed

U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Arcata

The Western Snowy Plover nesting season started Saturday on Central Coast Beaches, and Vandenberg Air Force Base is looking for volunteer docents to help protect the threatened bird.

The docents are needed throughout the entire season, which extends from March 1 to Sept. 30 at both Ocean and Surf Beaches.

The Pacific Coast population of the western snowy plover is federally listed under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 as threatened, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Volunteers would specifically help to protect the nesting grounds from disturbance. Educating and creating awareness among beach visitors could help ensure the beaches remain open during the bird's nesting season.

Vandenberg officials say the docent duties include wandering the beach to make contact with visitors, educating them about the bird's natural history, plight, and protection, and informing visitors about beach restrictions.

Snowy Plover Docent training will be provided by Vandendberg Air Force Base. Those interested in applying should email Samantha Kaisersatt or call (805) 605-0392.
