Mental health needs of LGBT older adults

Broadcast date: 3/24/16

Currently, more than 39 million people in the U.S. are over the age of 65 years, and of these more than 1.5 million identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).

Because of their unique histories and concerns, LGBT older adults experience unique economic and health disparities. For these reasons it is imperative that health service providers for LGBT older adults understand the importance of being open-minded, affirming and supportive in their care.

Join host Fred Munroe as he speaks with Meghan Boaz Alvarez, Clinical Director for TMHA and Traci Mello, Director of Senior Services for Wilshire Community Services as they discuss the unique mental health needs of LGBT older adults and the importance of service providers in being sensitive to the histories and concerns of LGBT people.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Fred Munroe is a co-host of the KCBX talk show Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-2:00. Fred has successfully divided his time as a local entrepreneur, political leader, and communicator. He owns and manages two local firms addressing personal travel planning and public transportation; Travel With Fred and Ridership Development Consultants.
