Pipeline company releases tarball origin analysis

Jordan Bell

The origins of several tarballs collected on Southern California beaches late last month were confirmed Monday.

Plains All American Pipeline announced that they received a portion of the lab results analyzing tarballs found on beaches from Gaviota to San Clemente.

They collected more than 50 samples from California shorelines, as well as samples from natural seeps and oil released from the pipeline.

Analysis suggests some of the oil found on the beaches in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties is from the Plains pipeline and from natural seeps.

Plains All American said they received six samples, two of which are consistent with the pipeline rupture. The pipeline company says they are still waiting on the results from three other samples.
