Rep. Capps tours Central Coast after retirement announcement

Chris Meagher, Rep. Lois Capps

Just a day after announcing her planned retirement in 2016, Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-Santa Barbara) visited San Luis Obispo County Thursday to meet with health officials about climate change.

A local nutrition program called Women, Infants, Children (WIC) is working climate change into its model. The WIC program gives vouchers for food and educates participants on healthy options.

Rep. Capps says buying locally, even if its just an apple, helps the environment by reducing green house gasses created through shipping. Capps says that while it may seem like a very small decision, when you "multiply that by all the moms on WIC" it makes a big difference. "You have to start somewhere," Capps said.

Rep. Capps says some of the best ideas in congress, start at the local level.

In addition to the climate change issue, Capps said she has set priorities for her remaining time in office. Along with reducing our impact on the environment, she wants comprehensive immigration reform and she hopes to cut the costs of college.
