Santa Barbara County job fair series

A series of job fairs are coming to Santa Barbara County as local leaders work to improve the county's unemployment numbers.

The Santa Barbara County Workforce Investment Board and the California Employment Development Department will launch the effort this Thursday at Santa Barbara's Westside Community Center from 11a-3p.

A Lompoc job fair will be held on May 1 at the Veterans' Memorial Hall from 1-4p. The Santa Maria version is scheduled for June 12 at the Veterans' Memorial hall from 1-4p.

February's unemployment numbers show north county is suffering from relatively high rates of joblessness, with Santa Maria, Lompoc and Guadalupe at the top of that list.

The jobs offered at these fairs will include private sector jobs requiring a variety of skill levels. They are mostly entry level positions.

“This is our second consecutive year collaborating to put these types of events together," said the board's director Raymond McDonald. “This year we are encouraging all employers and community based organizations to come out and join us in getting our unemployed back in the workforce.”
