State audit underway of King City Police Department

City of King - KingCity.com

A state audit of the King City Police Department got underway this week as investigators look into recent corruption convictions and the department's policies and procedures.

The audit was requested by Salinas Valley Assemblyman Luis Alejo this past summer following a string of legal problems for the department.

The acting police chief, a former police chief, the acting police chief's brother and four police officers were arrested last year and charged for their actions involving an illegal car impounding scheme and other corruption crimes. Several other officers were later arrested on separate charges.

In addition, this past summer a newly appointed police chief was fired without cause.

Alejo said Tuesday that it will take up to six months to complete the audit and the process will include a mandatory response from King City.

The Assemblyman has also called for a federal takeover of the department.
