Child abuse and neglect can be found in families across the social and economic spectrum. Why does child abuse occur?
Social isolation, financial stress, poverty, substance abuse, and domestic violence are all factors that can lead to adults abusing children. ACTION reports in San Luis Obispo County although there has been a 12% decrease in cases of child abuse from 2006 to 2012, the rate of cases was still higher than the state rate in 2012.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, established in 1983, to acknowledge and encourage families and communities to work together to prevent child abuse. Child abuse is preventable. It’s time to recognize we each play a part in promoting the social and emotional well-being of children and families in our communities, and can make a difference to support families year round to prevent abuse.
