STRIDE’s community-based obesity prevention research and programs

Broadcast: 8/27/2015

According to the last ACTION survey close to half (48%) of all adults in San Luis Obispo County were overweight or obese, and nearly 10% of children were overweight for their age, an increase from 7% in 2003. Since the 1980s, there has been a massive increase in overweight and obesity in all age, race, and education groups.

Obesity-related conditions like heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and some cancers, are the leading causes of preventable death in the United States. Reducing obesity would reduce disease incidence and burden on the healthcare system, leading also to a decreased economic burden. Estimated at $15.2 billion, California has the highest obesity-related costs in the United States.

Obesity is a complex problem without a simple solution. Experts believe there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution, instead a multi-faceted approach that addresses the complex array of factors that can contribute to obesity throughout the lifespan shows the greatest potential for success.

Join host Kris Kington-Barker as she speaks with Dr. Aydin Nazmi, Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at Cal Poly and Director of Cal Poly’s Center for Solutions Through Research in Diet and Exercise (STRIDE). He will be joined by faculty members Dr. Suzanne Phelan, and Dr. Alison Ventura as they discuss how STRIDEs research and programs address scientific and community needs related to the obesity epidemic- from pregnancy and infancy to adolescence.
