Swarm of earthquakes shake California's eastern Sierra

USGS

A moderate earthquake hit along the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Tuesday afternoon with the cities of Bishop and Big Pine along Highway 395 feeling the biggest jolt.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake was a magnitude 4.8 and hit just after 3:00 p.m. on a section of the Owens Valley Fault zone. It was followed about 20 minutes later by a 4-point-3.

A ShakeMap of the event shows It was felt over a wide area, including Bakersfield, Visalia, Fresno and Yosemite National Park.

The Bishop Police Department Facebook Page said Tuesday afternoon that there "were up to 6 earthquakes in the last 40 minutes!"

A few of the respondents to that post said they only felt the two largest ones.
