Transformed by Postpartum Depression

Broadcast date: 5/28/2015

For most pregnant women, the labor and birth of a new child can be a time of both fear and joy. Although most women have positive birth experiences, for those who have had a difficult or traumatic birth, and, or who suffer from postpartum depression, this usually joyful time can be filled with pain, depression, and loneliness.

Postpartum depression (PPD) impacts up to 25% of women annually, and depression is the second most common cause of hospitalization for women in the U.S. Preventing and treating traumatic childbirth, as well as reducing the stigma of postpartum depression can help ensure mother and baby are not negatively affected for life.

Join host Kris Kington-Barker as she speaks with Walker Karraa, Ph.D., a thought leader in the field of perinatal mental health, media and leadership who has been writing and researching maternal mental health for over a decade.  Through her writing and research, Dr. Karraa examines scientific, social and cultural paradigms of women's mental health through multiple philosophical perspectives.?? Her first book, Transformed by Postpartum Depression: Women's Stories of Trauma and Growth, presents her research revealing the traumatic and transformative nature of postpartum depression.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.
