UC Santa Barbara begins the academic year Thursday on the heels of an historic fiscal year.

The university is closing it's fiscal year with $134 million in private donations.

14,000 donors joined to break the fundraising record for the second time since 2012.

The largest donation, more than $65 million, is from Charlie Munger, Vice President of Berkshire Hathaway Corp.

Munger's money will go toward a facility for the UCSB-basedKavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. The physics facility is the world's leading collaborative research center of its kind.

Chancellor Henry Yang said that the campus is honored by the tremendous philanthropy of Mr. Munger, in his support of scientific collaboration and visitor housing for the Kavli institute.

The donations will fund several areas of student-life including scholarships, health and safety initiatives both on campus and in Isla Vista.
